What is KaratedoKaratedo refer to the martial art of empty hand that was originated in Okinawa, Japan. It was a system of self defense for the nobles and merchant class during feudal times in Okinawa. Developed as mixture of Chinese boxing and indigenous art. Before 20th century, it was called as Tote which means Chinese hand techniques, then introduced into mainland Japan as part of Japanese martial arts and as physical education subject. Before the World War II, it was renamed as Karate, which means empty hand. ![]() Eventually, Karate took on the form of Japanese Do, which means that it became a method of developing the mind and body together as one unit. Its strict discipline was codified to enhance concentration and mental sharpness, while its physical techniques were modified somewhat to provide an unparalleled method of physical development. Karatedo consists of punching, blocking, striking and kicking as primary techniques; takedowns, joint manipulations and striking vital body parts as complementary techniques. These techniques are combined into specific pattern called Kata (form) and are applied in Kumite (sparring). The vast majority of Japanese and Okinawan style karate schools emphasize this holistic development of the human being, and they teach an art that has the potential to unify the mind, the body, and the spirit into a fit and formidable unit. Karate is an ancient discipline designed to teach its followers not only how to defend themselves, but also how to improve his character and increase his awareness of the world around him. Many people take Karate for different reasons. Some people are interested in increasing their personal ability; others are interested in self defense, while others are interested in an exciting way to get fit and to stay in shape. Karate offers all of this, plus more. Often, new Karate students begin their training with only basic expectations, and are shocked to find out just how far reaching the benefits of the martial arts can be. Like any worthwhile activity, the more you put into your training, the more you will get out of it. Contrary to popular belief, Karate is not a fighting sport. In fact, it is an art of self defense. The objective of Karate is not to learn how to fight, but to learn how not to fight. In the event of a fight, the objective is not to learn how to win, but to learn how not to lose. As the master Dai Sensei Meitoku Yagi said: "Do not put your main purpose in mastering Karate technique itself. You should study the way of life through Karate. This is our goal." |
